Where do you place your faith?
February 3, 2008 by Matt.
This morining I was sitting in church and listening to the pastor preach. He was preaching from Matthew chapter 4. It was a wonderful message on putting our focus fully on Christ. Then he breifly mentioned Matthew 6: 33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” I read that verse and then read a few verses before and after this one in order to put this verse into context. Then it hit me; Jesus was talking about placing your faith in God and he would provide for you.
It was at this point that I realized that every one of us lives by faith. This is true of believers and non-believers alike. Each day we go to bed with faith that our alarm with wake us in the morning, we step into the shower and turn the knob with faith that water will come out, in the winter we put on our coats with faith that they will protect us from the cold, we get in out car with faith that it will crank and take us to work, we go to work with faith that our employer with pay us, we purchase houses, cars and many other things on credit with faith that our employer will still be there and that they will continue to allow us to work there and that the pay check they give us will clear. We all lives our lives by faith. The question is where do you place your faith? Now, some will say that we trust in all of these things because of our faith in God and if this is true for you then you need read no further, but be sure that you are being completely honest with yourself.
We place our faith in many earthly things hoping that they will never leave us nor forsake us. However, has your boss ever promised not to forsake you?? If we are to be completely honest with ourselves we must admit that our employers are only going to keep us around so long as it profits them. I don’t say this to bash the business world. Most businesses exist to make money and if something is preventing the business from doing this, then they must clear it out.
So this brings up the question, what do you exist for. Are you seeking the kindom of God first, then waiting for things to be added to you? Where do you place your faith? Many say that they place their faith in God, but are you actually placing your faith in your employer instead, or perhaps your creditors? Have you every paid off a credit card, but kept it around “just in case?” If so then at that point are you truly showing faith in God, or are you saying to God, “I trust you God, but JUST IN CASE you fail me I want to have this credit card.” Hmm, that doesn’t sound like faith to me. At that moment you are placing more faith in your credit card then in the God of all creation. Has the Visa company promised to never leave you nor forsake you? If you think they feel that way, try skipping a payment or two, see how fast they forsake you then. In the Bible God promised no less then 11 times that he would not forsake us. How many times has your employer promised that. I would be willing to bet that they have never made that promise.
So, we live by faith, but are you placing your faith in the God that created the world, the all powerful, all knowing God of all creation? Are you truly placing your faith in the God that despite creating all things has promised to never leave you nor forsake you? Or are you placing your faith in your employer, or your creditors. Are you seeking first the kingdom of God?
I you really want to put this to the test, go to work tomorrow and ask your employer if they will ever forsake you. See how they respond. Next, call your creditors and ask them if they will provide for you no matter what. See how they respond. Look at your car and consider if it will still be serving people thousands of years from now.
I can say with confidence that the answer to all of the above questions will be NO. However, God has promised to do all of those things for you. In a few minutes of searching I was able to find 11 verses were God promised not to forsake us. In Matthew chapter 6 he promised to provide for us. And this God is the same God that walked in the garden with Adam and Eve, the same God that was with Moses on the mountain, the same God that told Noah to build an ark, the same God that delivered the children of Isreal from captivity and then lead them to the promise land. This is the same God that will continue to provide for us today and has promised us even today to never leave us, nor forsake us.
So, where do you place your faith???
