Is the shadow greater than the man?

Have you ever stood in the sun light as the sun was setting, then watched as your shadow grew longer and longer? If you haven’t, then you should some time. As the sun goes down your shadow will get longer and longer eventually becoming considerably longer that you are tall. As this happens is there a point at which the shadow becomes greater then the man casting it? As the shadow grows is there a point were the shadow becomes more then person who’s image it portrays? Your probably thinking, “Of course not, it’s just a shadow,” or something along those lines.

As crazy as this shadow question seems, man often thinks this way. Since the creation of man we have made many great things. Just look around you at the many inventions that man has created. Look at the great works of art that have come from the hands of man. Consider the amazing music that we have to listen to.

Many people look at these things and marvel at the greatness of man. However, Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man IN HIS IMAGE.”So, if we are created in his image; is it any wonder that we have such a strong desire to create? After all we are created in the image of the one who created everything. Is it any wonder that we have created so many great things? Think of the Mona Lisa, The Sistine chapel, or the many works of Beethoven and Mozart. If we are created, “in his image,” is it any wonder that we have created such great things.  We were created in the image of the one who created everything, so we were born to be creators.

Still with all the great things that man has created have we become greater than the one who created us. Or, are we simply the shadow growing longer in the light of the setting sun? It is easy sometimes to look at many of the great things man has accomplished and think how great we have become. But, we must always remember that we were created in the image of God and are, therefore, only a shadow of the great one. No matter how long this shadow may grow, it will never become more than the one who casts the shadow.
